Choosing the right color for your exterior or interior spaces can be challenging. But you don’t have to go it alone.

We’ve been guiding clients for decades on testing, evaluating, and choosing with confidence the colors that adorn the walls and facades of their homes and businesses. And we love what we do!

Consider the vibe – what feeling do you want the space to invoke? This feeling can help focus your exploration.
Consider the colors that will surround your choices. This palette can influence your options by guiding you to colors that either complement or accent these hues.
Consider the lighting – and sit with a sample throughout the cycle of a day. In situ. Choosing a paint color at the store will reveal what that color looks like at the store, but it can tell another tale in your own space.
Consult an expert (or a team of them) who will partner with you in the process. There are other considerations like sheen, durability and more. Even environmental impact. But don’t worry about those things. Luxbrush Painting is here to guide you on the way.

Did you know that in the state of Vermont you don’t need a contractor’s license to call yourself a professional painting contractor?

There’s no state-wide governing body that oversees painters, making sure that every so-called “pro” delivers quality results. If someone wants to become a painter he or she doesn’t need to go to painter’s school. They don’t need a certain number of apprenticeship hours. All they need is a brush, a ladder, and maybe a business card.

There are all kinds of painters in Vermont. Maybe they’re college kids trying to make a quick buck on vacation. Maybe they’re a one-man band with an old pick-up and some elbow grease. Maybe they’re a larger outfit with a fleet of trucks. Each of these types of contractors has their place, but if anyone can call themselves pros, what does this word even mean these days?

In recent years, I have become a bit of a foodie. I’ve nibbled delicious meals from all over the country and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that plating matters. A recent trip to Nebraska confirmed for me that a little garnish and some drizzled sauce can highlight the visual aspect of a meal and greatly elevate the entire dining experience. But what has this to do with painting?

What gourmet chefs and savvy homeowners have in common is the understanding that when appearance matters, a little thoughtful arrangement can have dramatic effects. If we can compare curb appeal to gourmet food plating, we might say that an eye-catching front door color is like a bold sweep of sauce or a striking rosemary garnish. A breathtaking front door can be the very highlight of curb appeal.

It’s Nice to be Recognized

Having just received an award from the Better Business Bureau for nine years of committed customer service, we at Luxbrush have been thinking a lot lately about the growth and changes that we have see in the past decade or so. From our humble origins operating out of a small garage in South Londonderry to our present status as one of the largest, most versatile painting outfits in Southern Vermont, it’s certainly been a wild ride.

One of the secrets of our success has been a commitment to craft that extends beyond the typical definition of “good painting.” Sure, we’re painting pros and we’ve adopted the high standards of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. Sure, we take pride in our staff’s extensive knowledge of surface prep and best practices for painting and staining. But our obsession with “craft” doesn’t stop with mastering paint technique.

We’ve spent years honing our customer service craft, as well. In these parts, it’s hard to get a contractor on the phone once hunting season starts. As we’ve grown, we’ve learned how important it is to greet our customers with a live voice and not a lame voicemail. We have a friendly office staff who happily schedule appointments, answer questions and (most importantly) build genuine relationships with our customers. We’re here when you call, we listen to you, and–as this BBB Award proves–you’ve taken notice. Thank you for your loyalty.

We love our customers and our customers love us. Luxbrush wants to be Vermonters’ “painter for life.” The meaning of this phrase is two-fold. First, we know that a quality paint job on a properly prepared surface may well last a lifetime. Second, we know that once someone experiences our level of craft–in all senses of the term–they’ll have us on speed-dial for all of their future projects.

We love chatting with our customers. What You Need to Know About Paint Store Samples

The Importance of Lighting

Unless you light your home with industrial-strength fluorescent bulbs, your chosen color is going to look much different once you get it home. And light bulbs are just the tip of the iceberg. Once you’ve taped your paint chip to the wall to see how it looks in the natural light, you must consider how its appearance will change throughout the day. The natural light at breakfast and the light at dinner are literally as different as night and day. You’ll want to make sure you love your color at all times, but especially during the hours when you’ll be in that room the most.

The Importance of Placement

Consider how your new color will interact with the designs and hues that will be in the room. Think about your furniture and accent pieces. Some colors look completely different when they’re put next to others. If you are transitioning from one bold color to another, don’t just tape your color sample paint chip to the wall. Instead, first tape down a large piece of white paper so that the chip isn’t fighting the surrounding color. This will give you a more accurate depiction of how the color will look on the wall.

The Importance of Sheen

Did you know that paint chips you pick up in the store all have an eggshell finish? If you want a semi-gloss, satin, high-gloss, or any other sheen, be prepared for the actual color to differ slightly from that sample. The general rule is: the higher the sheen, the darker and more intense the color will be.

If you plan to pick up some actual sample paint (instead of a paint chip card), be aware that most paint stores will only provide free test pints in eggshell sheen. If you want a sample of your chosen color in any other sheen, you’ll likely have to purchase an entire quart of it! Of course, you could just eliminate all the guesswork and call Luxbrush!
